Approvals Process

The environmental assessment and approvals process for the Botany Cogeneration Plant project will be comprehensive and involve extensive community and stakeholder consultation.

State Significant Development

The project will be assessed by the NSW Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) as a State Significant Development (SSD).

Following initial project feasibility investigations, in line with SSD process, SUEZ submitted a request for Secretary’s Environmental Assessment Requirements (SEARS) to DPIE supported by a Scoping Report.

The SEARS were recently issued by DPIE and SUEZ Australia will now commence preparation of an Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) for the project. It is during the EIS stage that comprehensive technical assessments for the proposal will be completed such as potential impacts to air quality, human health risk, noise and traffic impacts and cumulative impacts.

Community and stakeholder consultation will continue throughout the development of the EIS.

Once the assessments are complete, the EIS will be placed on public exhibition for community and stakeholder comment.

The steps, progress and documentation in the SSD application process are available on the DPIE website.

The indicative timeline outlines the key phases and decision-making steps.
